Processing trauma and difficult experiences safely with hypnotherapy
Distressing events can leave deep marks. They can make you feel vulnerable and create an ongoing sense of insecurity and helplessness. This often leads to a lasting emotional or psychological trauma. It is completely understandable if you cannot get out of that by yourself. In my practice in Leidschendam, near The Hague, I offer a calm and safe environment to process this burden step by step.
Do you recognise these complaints?
A trauma is not always visible on the outside, but unprocessed memories can trigger intense emotions unexpectedly. A certain sound, smell or image can suddenly pull you back into the past, including the physical tension, fear or panic you felt at that time.
The way body and mind respond to trauma differs from person to person. Symptoms may appear immediately after the event, but also only after weeks, months or even years. You may struggle with inner restlessness, unexplained anxious feelings, nightmares, flashbacks, avoidance or emotional blocks.

Questions and answers
How does trauma processing with hypnotherapy work?
Trauma-related feelings are largely stored in your unconscious system. They act like an invisible brake on your life. With hypnotherapy, we can approach and process these inner blocks in a gentle and safe way.
We work directly with your subconscious, but always at your pace. The memory of the event is not erased, but we do work on reducing the heavy emotional charge attached to it. This can create more calm, clarity and trust.
Do you need to relive a trauma?
No. You do not have to relive a trauma completely in order to work with it. The aim is precisely to make processing possible without overwhelming you again.
We work carefully and at your pace, always looking at what feels safe and manageable in that moment.
This also means there is room to work step by step. Sometimes processing begins with learning to recognise tension in your body before we look further at what lies underneath it.
How do you recognise unprocessed trauma?
Unprocessed trauma can show up as recurring tension, restlessness, startle responses, avoidance, nightmares, emotional numbness or the feeling that your body remains constantly alert.
Sometimes you may react intensely to something small without it fully making sense. That can be a sign that an older experience is still affecting you.
Also, when you notice that you shut down quickly, freeze or feel unsafe without a clear reason, this may point to an experience that has not yet been fully processed.
What if you do not know the cause?
That is very common. You may clearly experience complaints, but not know exactly where they come from or when they started.
With hypnotherapy, we do not need to have everything clear in advance. Together we explore step by step what lies underneath the complaints and what needs attention.
This is often especially helpful with old or vague complaints. So you do not need a complete story or a clear memory before processing can begin.
Can old trauma keep affecting you?
Yes, old experiences can continue to affect you for a long time, even when they happened far in the past. Especially in the case of childhood trauma or long-term insecurity, the impact may only become clearly noticeable later in life.
This can show up as fear, mistrust, shame, difficulty with boundaries or recurring tension. In those situations, it can be very valuable to process that deeper layer after all.
Sometimes it can feel as though your reaction does not match what is happening now. In that case, it is very possible that not only the present is playing a role, but also an older layer that is still being touched.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Sometimes it is simply not possible to process a shocking event on your own. You notice this in ongoing physical and psychological complaints. In that case, we speak of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Re-experiences can be so intense that they bring extreme fear, exhaustion and avoidance, which can heavily affect your daily life.
Childhood trauma and old emotional pain
Not every trauma comes from one major event. Long-lasting insecurity, rejection, loss or emotional neglect can also leave deep traces. We often refer to this as childhood trauma or old emotional pain that later shows up in life as fear, mistrust, shame, difficulty with boundaries or recurring tension.
Especially when you notice that your reaction is bigger than the situation itself, it can be valuable to explore together which older layer is being triggered.
Working safely without forcing anything
Before we begin, I create a trusted, non-judgemental environment in which you can feel at ease. We make clear agreements about the course of the therapy and we never work faster than feels right for you.
You do not need to relive everything in order to begin trauma processing. The aim is to create room for processing carefully, without overwhelming yourself.
When is additional help important?
Hypnotherapy can mean a great deal for trauma and PTSD, but in cases of severe dysregulation, suicidal thoughts or other complex psychiatric problems, additional or different support may be needed. During an introduction, we always assess carefully whether hypnotherapy is appropriate for your request for help at this moment.
